The Secure Data Storage Solution: SecureDrive BT

The hardware-encrypted SecureDrive BT eliminates data leaks while keeping digital files safe. The device is hardware-encrypted paired with wireless authentication via a mobile device and is FIPS-validated. It can be remotely wiped from anywhere in the world if your device is lost or stolen.

SecureDrive BT is Remote Management (RM)-ready through a separate subscription that can be added at any time after purchase. RM allows an Admin to manage drive access remotely to view users, enable geo- and time-fencing, and perform remote password reset. Each of these features are performed software-free through a web portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my data or encryption key get passed over Bluetooth signal?

No. Bluetooth is simply the communication channel. The authentication is handled via secure server/app exchange. Neither your data nor the encryption key can be extracted by any side channel attacks or Bluetooth listener.

How do I unlock/lock the drive?

You must download the SecureData Lock® mobile app. After installing it you will be able to pair the device (make sure your Bluetooth is turned ON). Once synced, you can use the app to log in.

Once you have successfully logged in you will be able to change user settings and swipe left on the device name to lock it. Once the device is locked you must log in again in order to mount the drive.

Where do I get the app?

The SecureData Lock® and SecureData Lock® RM are available to download via the Apple Store or Google Play. Type “SecureData Lock” in the search field to find and install the app on any mobile device.

Can I use my Face ID or Touch ID to unlock my device?

Yes. Using the SecureData Lock® app you can select to authenticate via Touch ID or Face ID (Apple only).

If I forget my password, does anyone have a copy or can I reset it?

No. There are absolutely no backdoors nor resets. After 10 consecutive, incorrect attempts the anti-hacking, brute-force self-defense mechanism wipes all user data and drive attributes.

If I reset my drive can I still use it or is it destroyed?

The drive will revert to factory settings, become unformatted, and the default drive name and all user data will be gone. The drive requires formatting for continued use.

If I reset my drive can SecureData get my files back?

No. Resetting the drive activates a crypto erase command which deletes then regenerates the encryption key. Once the key is gone there is absolutely no way to get it back. Even though encrypted data will be on the drive, there will not be a viable way to decrypt it.

If I lost my drive, can I reset it remotely to delete my data?

Yes, that’s what “remote wipe” is about. If it’s a stand-alone device without a Remote Management subscription, then the user can perform a remote wipe.

Can I add Remote Management later?

Yes. SecureDrive BT products allow adding Remote Management to complement and enhance your purchase. You can switch from SecureData Lock® (non-remote managed) to SecureData Lock® RM (remote managed) status without installing any software—the device will just need to be provisioned using the SecureData Lock® Admin app.

Do I need an internet connection or a cell signal to use the BT Drive app?

While using the SecureData Lock® app you do not need to be connected to the internet or have a cell signal in order to unlock the drive. However, some settings require an internet connection or cell phone signal, including dual-factor authentication, password recovery, and remote wipe. Alternatively, if your device is remote managed you must unlock it via the SecureData Lock® RM app which requires an internet connection or cell service.

What smartphones, smartwatches, or wearables does it work with?

SecureDrive BT works with any modern mobile device. Here are a few product lines with which it has been tested.

iOS Devices:

  • iPhones: 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X

Abstract:
The SecureDrive BT has successfully disrupted the status quo we have been accustomed to seeing with hardware encrypted devices. Among its most notable and innovative features include Secure Wireless User Authentication, Remote Management, 2 factor authentication and remote wipe capabilities. These truly make the SecureDrive BT an absolute must have if you value your data security. The drive comes at a hefty price tag of US$559 for the 1TB SSD version and goes upto US$3,639 for the 8TB version. They do offer HDD options as well which start at US$285 for the 1TB version. Most general users will think twice with such an investment, however these products aren’t intended for the average Joe either.Given the range of similar products we have tested in the past, the SecureDrive BT does take the crown for ease of use, performance and overall features offered. It’s an absolute recommendation from us if your budget fits

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTSOur SecureData Secure Drive BT 2TB external SSD has been in use for a few weeks now and we are in an excellent position as a portion of our work environment includes rather secure PC equipment that is very finicky with just about any type of security software; it rejects it. The Secure Drive BT works great, confirming its claim to be compatible in any OS environment….and so it should. Your access to the Secure Drive BT is through an App on your phone which is very highly configurable to your needs. The PC only recognizes it as being an open drive when unlocked.Data security for the Secure Drive BT is top-notch and we like the fact that so many of the security options were left to be configured very easily by the user.. Warranty is decent at two-years, build is beyond reproach and pricing is can be expected for a security device such as this. Great job SecureData!

Abstract:
The SecureDrive BT is a one of a kind external hardware-encrypted storage device (for now) because of its Bluetooth authentication approach and, if you carry sensitive data with you (the usual case with corporate workers), then you need to consider using this type of drive because of their impenetrable nature. When compared to the traditional hardware-encrypted drive equipped with a keypad, the SecureDrive BT is slimmer, therefore more portable, it does allow the possibility of password recovery (along with a multitude of authentication options), but you do need to rely on a mobile device every time you wish to unlock the drive and, if you want any advanced features (such as admin privileges, which is a standard on its competitors or the impressive geo-fence feature, unique to this device), you do need to purchase a separate subscription.

Abstract:
The SecureData SecureDrive BT SSD is a neat, compact, well-built portable drive that is deceptively secure, one that offers security to those who need it but without screaming it is protected. The shift from needing a keypad on the enclosure to using an iPhone app is smart, as it obscures security while at the same time resulting in a good-looking design that even puts some conventional portable drives to shame. There's not really a need for the remote management options outside of enterprise or government use, but it's good to know that in extreme cases, the option to use the more exotic security features are there. Even the more pedestrian use of Face ID or Touch ID is simultaneously smart and secure, making it as easy as possible for the drive's user to unlock using biometric security without simplifying it for would-be attackers. It's hard not to recommend the SecureDrive BT SSD. It's protective, physically well designed, and offers the novelty of Face ID unlocking. What's not to like about that?

Using your phone to unlock the SecureDrive BT is no less convenient that other means, and it fits right in with the modern lifestyle. Throw in good looks, FIPS 140-3 certification, and good performance, and you have one of our favorite secure drives on the market. As with all secure storage, however, it's expensive. (Cheaper hard drive models are available.)

Abstract:
The SecureData encrypted hardware (Secure Drive and Secure USB) are solid investments for portable data security. The devices work well and even though it might take some time to get used to the way the ‘system’ works, it’s well-worth the effort. I do wish that the RM side of this was a little more user-friendly, but I do understand that it’s really set-up for administrators and not the everyday user. I like that these drives give you the option to remotely reset them and treat them like other remote devices. I also like that the physical hardware seems to be very robust. The case of the hard drive and the USB drive are both aluminum, but still lightweight. I didn’t notice any issues with heat with the Secure Drive, but from time to time (depending on what I was doing) the USB drive did get a bit warm. I can recommend these drives if you are looking for something more secure for your data.
